๐ฆ ๐ฎ๐น COVID-19 & Mental Health: Supporting Italy’s Public Health Residents ๐๐ฉ⚕️๐จ⚕️
The COVID-19 pandemic has evolved far beyond a public health emergency—it has become a profound psychosocial crisis ๐๐ญ. While patients and families have faced immense challenges, healthcare professionals have silently carried a significant emotional burden. Among them, Public Health Residents (PHRs) in Italy continue to play a pivotal role in the national pandemic response ๐ฎ๐น๐ก️.
Recognizing the urgent need to evaluate their mental well-being, the “Public Mental Health” Working Group of the Medical Residents’ Assembly of the Italian Society of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine has launched an important initiative: the Public Health Residents’ Anonymous Survey in Italy (PHRASI) ๐๐.
๐ What is PHRASI?
PHRASI is a nationwide, cross-sectional study designed to explore the mental health landscape of Italian PHRs. The study uses an 88-item self-administered, voluntary questionnaire distributed via Google Forms ๐ฒ๐ป across the Assembly’s resident network.
๐ง What Does the Survey Assess?
The survey evaluates the association between sociodemographic factors and various mental health outcomes, including:
-
๐ฟ Overall wellness
-
๐ฝ️ Eating disorders
-
๐ Sleeplessness
-
๐ท Alcohol misuse
-
๐ Depression
-
๐ฐ Anxiety
All Public Health Residents enrolled in a four-year postgraduate program at Italian Schools of Public Health are eligible to participate ๐๐ฅ.
๐ฏ Why This Matters
PHRASI aims to create a comprehensive and detailed snapshot of the psychological state of Italian PHRs ๐๐งฉ. As a vital segment of the healthcare workforce, these residents represent not only frontline contributors today but also future leaders in public health policy and prevention strategies ๐๐.
Understanding their mental health challenges can help:
-
๐ ️ Develop targeted mental health support programs
-
๐ Inform institutional policies
-
๐ค Promote workplace well-being initiatives
-
๐ก Establish evidence-based regulations to protect healthcare professionals
๐ A Step Toward Healthier Healthcare Systems
By shedding light on the mental health of Public Health Residents, PHRASI may serve as a benchmark model for strengthening psychological support systems within healthcare settings ๐ฅ✨.
Because protecting those who protect public health is not optional—it’s essential. ๐๐ก️
